Moving from Wordpress to Tumblr
Like some other people, I’m in the process of closing down my Wordpress blog and rolling it into my Tumblr blog. I’ve done this before, but Tumblr was missing some features back then (e.g. pages) that it has since added (also, I’m super-happy that Tumblr is making money now). As time has gone on, I’ve found that I’d much rather spend my time typing words into Tumblr’s platform than Wordpress. In short, I ♥ Tumblr.
If you must know, I used a Python script, wp2tumblr by Gabor Lenard, to copy everything over and there is a chance that I may have spammed your dashboard in the process. If this is the case, I apologize profusely. For those interested, here’s a guide that I didn’t read until well after I ran the Python script.
Some notes:
- Permalinks from the old site are broken. Oh well, most people found my site through Google searches or by heading directly to the front page. No big loss. Google will probably hate me for it, but I’ll live.
- I deleted posts that weren’t formatted correctly and beyond help. I didn’t realize until the import how grungy Wordpress’s visual editor was. Anything I did in Markdown came in beautifully, but some of the older stuff was beyond help (and no longer relevant in many cases).
- I’m going to switch out the URL on this site to http://stevekinney.net, which will most likely break the permalinks here as well. This is a little more brutal, due to reblogs and whatnot. Again, I apologize profusely.
- Comments bit the dust. The script had an error where Python was supposed to import some Disqus doohickey. I’m alright with it as I’ve been leaning more to the commenting model that Daring Fireball, 43 Folders, and Seth’s Blog employ (i.e. none). If you want to discuss a post, write up a response on your blog or hit me up on Twitter.
- I cut out old posts that just didn’t look right in Tumblr. This included stuff that had embeded Scribd files as well as YouTube and TED Talks videos and whatnot. I may go and repost the videos by hand using Tumblr’s video format or I may not.
Within in the next day or so, I’m going to have my old URL point here instead. I will also redirect my Feedburner RSS feed here as well. I’m not sure how smoothly any of that is going to go so I apologize in advance, once last time.
I’ve been toying with the idea of including too feeds: one that would include everything posted here and one that would only contain longer-form essays and featured content. Tumblr can be a little funky sometimes with the way it formats RSS items and I certainly don’t want to overload anyone’s feed reader. Have no fear, I will let you know when the time comes.
